What up shredder?

It’s Christian from shred school.

Once you start to master some of the basics and even some more intermediate and advanced tricks, it's time to get weird.

And that's the cool thing about snowboarding is there's endless possibilities.

You can never be as good as your potential is, and there's always new tricks to learn. It's kind of like golf, but for young people.

So today we're going to talk about 10 weird advanced snowboard tricks to try this weekend. You're gonna make sure you never miss a video.

If you want to learn ALL the pre-requisites, this week we've got 50% Off Shred School: https://www.edshreds.com/school

1: The Snowboard Tail Tap BS 180

So the first trick is the tail tap backside 180. This is a super fun trick because there's a reversal of momentum. You shift to your board front side, tap your tail off the object, and it spins you the other way. It's kind of like a windup top or something.

Go out there, find a sign, a tree, a log, a gym, whatever you need and approach it. Front side, turn your shoulders backside in the air. Tap that tail and spin out and land switch chick.

2: The Snowboard Tail Tap Out of a Rail

Number two is another tail tap. It's the tail tap out of a rail.

Not exactly sure what this one is called, but it feels super cool. And it's that same reversal of momentum that we had in that tail tap back. So an 80, I like to do this one the other way. So while we do a tail tap backside, one 80, I'm going to do this trick on a rail front side.

So I like to pop into a no slide, lean heavily on your nose. And just as you're about to come out, pop up that nose, tap the tail by turning your board backside and then spin front side out of the trick. Again, it feels super cool reversing that momentum and people will kind of be like, wait, what, what did he just do?

3: Mark Frank Montoya (MFM) Cab 360

Trick number three is what I call the MFM cab 360 named after Mark Frank Montoya. Now, if you're not old enough to know who that is, he is one of the most stylish snowboarders ever. And he used to be a big name back in the day, but he would do flat ground tricks and he popularized some of the weirder stuff that we see out there. Lay. So the MFM cab three is really where instead of just doing a switch three 60, you're leaning heavily into the tip and tail of your snowboard and you're exaggerating those movements.

So come in, switch, pop off your tail land on your nose and just try to exaggerate the flex of your board. Just like you're on a skateboard and you're pivoting around on the wheels.

4: The Snowboard Miller Flip

Number four, we have a Miller flip made popular on a skateboard.

This is like a front side invert to fakie and a vert ramp. But on a snowboard, we have to do this over an obstacle, usually a spine. So the Miller foot, you're going to come up on your heel side edge, and you're almost going to do a back flip over the rail.

And you're going to throw that front hand down right in the middle. The key to the Miller foot is commitment. If you bail out halfway you're to get hurt. And since we're doing this over a rail, it's going to hurt a lot more than the snow. So just coming hillside, it's a mix between that front three and a back flip.

Put your hand down in the mail to throw yourself back to your feet and ride away. Clean trick.

5: Snowboard Team Dog Off A Knuckle, Rail, or Box

Number five is the team dog off a knuckle, a rail or a box.

So sure. It's cool to be able to tame dog out in the power of a jump, but can you do it where it's least expected? So the cool thing about this is if you mess up on the first jump in a park line, you can actually tame dog off the knuckle and your friends are watching from the top.

They thought you were done cause you didn't land your first trick. And there you go front flipping into the landing. People love this one. It's not too hard. If you can tame dog off a jump and it's going to up your skills in the eyes of everyone around you.

6: Snowboard Double Shifty 360

Trick number six is the double shifty, either 360 or 540.

This one makes you a little dizzy. But what we're going to do is we're going to do a usual five 40, but we're going to throw in two shifts.

These checks are going to show, throw in a shifty the way that you're spinning at first, and then you're going to bring it back the opposite way. It's a reversal in the air. So kind of like those tail taps, but we get that unwind happening while we're spinning.

You also have to keep track of where you are in the spin, but this one is super fun. And again, it's one of those tricks that people are just going to stop and say, wait, what

7: Snowboard Disaster Rails, or Gap Rails

Trick number seven, we have what is called a disaster or a gap onto a rail. So sure you can. Boardslide a kink trail, or you can just skip the whole first half of the rail and land on the very last piece.

We call that a disaster. What you want to do for disaster is just get your speed up and make sure that you may get past the kink. Because if you land in the middle, all your momentum's going to stop and you're going to get fucked. So good way to do this is you can practice airing over the side of the rail

And once you know you have your speed, right, then we're just going to launch right onto that last piece of the rail. Since we aren't hitting any kinks on the way out, we just got to keep our balance on that one piece. And then we'll land on the snow. It's not too different from hitting a jump trick.

8: Snowboard Fence Ollie

Number eight, we have the fence ollie so it's cool to be able to all eat on flat ground off side hits off rulers.

But once you've got that dialed in, it's time to get a little bit rebellious out there.

So the next slow sign you see, maybe you eat up, you ride up to it and you all leap over that sign. Just be sure to keep your nose up or are you going to clip and regret it? This is another one that's going to make your friends stare and think that dude is crazy.

9: One Foot Snowboard Slides

Number 9, an unconventional one, I have one foot board slides. This one takes some real balance. So you want to make sure you have your tricks dialed in. But if you're like Alex, here, you can take this to a front side board slide.

And it looks like, you know, nothing else we've ever seen.

10: Snowboard Spray a Skier

why take snowboard lessons

And lastly, 10, we're going to keep the danger factor high. I have spray a skier. Again, we get into this game where the more risk is involved with a trick, the board adrenaline rush, we get the more excited it makes us.

And the more it pumps our friends up. So be respectful out there. But if the opportunity presents itself and you have some power in front of you and a skier cutting across the run, maybe they're even your friends, give it a good spray, throw up that rooster tail and high tail it out of there. So that's it.

Snowboarding Tricks for Advanced

Once you've mastered the basic tricks for no longer working on the fundamentals, we can start to get weird with it. The cool thing about snowboarding is you can be creative. You can put your own spin on it. You can do things that nobody has ever seen before.

So these are 10 weird advanced snowboard tricks to go out there and try this weekend.

You can even make up your own versions, put your own spin on it. If so, we'd love to see them throw a link in the comments.

That’s all for today.

Peace out shredder.

10 Beginner Snowboard Tricks To Learn First

Introduction

50% Off Online Snowboard School: https://www.edshreds.com/school

What up shredder!

Snowboarding is arguably the funnest sport in the world!

And that’s because there are endless tricks to learn, you can always get better, and you get to express yourself however you want.

There are no rules like basketball or football, no referee… No one is telling you what to do.

The choice is yours… But sometimes, the choice can be overwhelming. So today, we’re going to make it easier for you and break down ten tricks to learn first.

Learning these tricks will help you with the hard ones, and have you stomping tricks you never thought you could do a year ago, you might even find yourself saying I wish I had watched this video a couple seasons ago..

If you want to learn ALL the pre-requisites, this week we've got 50% Off Shred School: https://www.edshreds.com/school

1: The Snowboarding Ollie

The ollie originated on a skateboard, but is much much easier on a snowboard. We can use the power of our tail to “pop” which uses the flex of our board to propel us into the air. The way to ollie is to bend down, and load up your weight on your back foot. You can even rock forward a little first to get some momentum.

Jump with your legs while pushing off your tail and lifting your front leg high in the air. Once your tail leaves the ground, suck your back leg up into your chest to level out your board, and float the rest of the way to the ground.

Start on flat ground and work your way up to rollers, side hits, and jumps.

2: Riding Switch While Snowboarding

how to ride switch on a snowboard

Trick 2 is riding switch. While necessarily a “trick” in itself, the ability to ride switch is essential to almost everything we do in snowboarding. The problem is, most people don’t like to do things they aren’t good at so they avoid it entirely. Give yourself permission to suck, and start practicing switch for at least one full run every time you’re at the mountain. Before you know, it won’t feel so unnatural and you’ll start to enjoy it. If you’re wondering how to ride switch, you already know how. It’s the same as regular, so copy what you do in your natural stance. It’s all about time spent practicing.

3: Swivels and Reverts on a Snowboard

Next we have swivels or reverts. See I told you you needed to know how to ride switch. This is like a 180 without leaving the ground. This will get us used to riding both directions, and will teach us how to 180 without having to ollie first. The key here is to turn your shoulders first and let your lower body follow. Just be sure to keep your downhill edge up, or you could faceplant.

4: Finding Side Hits on a Snowboard

Now you’re starting to look like a real freestyle snowboarder out there. It’s time to find some side hits. Side hits are little jumps on the side of the run that are great for practicing our tricks without heading into the park. The key to finding side hits is to weave in and out of the trees, and ride the side of the runs. Use your creativity and surf the mountain with your own style.

5: Snowboard FS 180

Once you’ve dialed in some side hits, find a good heelside side hit and get ready to do your first frontside 180. A fs 180 is when the front of your body spins facing down the mountain, taking off regular and landing switch. If you’ve practiced your ollies, swivels and riding switch this should be no problem as it’s just a combination of all three. As you start to take off the jump, open up your shoulder down the mountain and let your legs follow. Land switch and ride away.

You can also practice this on the flat ground as an ollie 180.

6: Snowboard BS 180

Next up is the backside 180 which is quite a bit harder than the fs 180 because you have your first “blind landing” meaning, you don’t get to stare at the landing the whole time. The key to the backside 180 is to turn your shoulders first and let your legs follow just like any other spin, but when you land, stare straight down at your feet rather than down the mountain. Once you’ve safely landed, then you can look up and see where you’re riding. Just make sure the landing is clear before trying this.

This is going to be easiest off of a toeside side hit. You can also practice this on flat ground before taking it to the air.

7: Snowboard Butters

Next we have butters. You’ll want to have your 180s dialed in before trying these, as we usually 180 in to and out of butters. All we have to do to butter is move our hips over the nose or tail of our board. You can even reach for the tip of your snowboard with your hands to help you remember. Bend the leg you’re flexing in to and straighten the leg that’s lifted. Be sure to keep your edges up so you don’t catch, and 180 out.

There is an infinite combination of butters, so be sure to try this fs, bs and switch.

8: How to Hit Small Jumps on a Snowboard

By now, you’ve been making steady progress and building up some fundamentals. Sometimes people make the mistake of heading to the big park here. Don’t. Try to find the mini park, which almost all resorts with a park have. Find a nice small, safe jump, and roll over the jump to get a feel for it. Once you’re comfortable try an ollie and catch some air. This is where you’ll start to get hooked.

9: Basic Snowboard Grabs

Once you can ollie off small jumps and side hits, try adding in some grabs. An easy one is the indy grab where your back hand reaches down to grab your toe edge in between your bindings. One tip here is to suck your knees up into your chest rather than trying to bend the whole way over.

If you can do that, there are endless grabs available.

10: Snowboard 50-50s on Boxes

Lastly we have 50-50s on boxes. A 50-50 is where you ride straight along the box. I’ve added this last because metal hurts more than snow and you want to make sure you’re comfortable before giving this a shot. The thing you have to learn about boxes is you can’t use your edges, you have to always stay “flat based” or you will “slip out.” Find a small “ride on” box in the mini park, get up some speed and ride straight across. Keep your base flat and your board straight and you’ll be just fine.

11: Snowboarding Tricks for Beginners

That’s it, 10 snowboard tricks to learn first. Start small, work your way up, and practice practice practice. Dialing in these tricks is going to make everything easier. Mastering the fundamentals is the key to progressing faster than you ever thought possible.

Go out there, give them a try and let us know how it goes.

Be sure to check out shred school to get an in depth breakdown of all of these tricks + we’ll show you in both regular and goofy so it matches up with your stance.

That’s all for today.

Peace out shredder.

What up shredder…

It’s Christian From shred school

Are you one of those snowboarders… who's been riding for 2 years, 5 years even ten years…

I can 100% handle like any terrain or conditions and the hardest slopes on the mountain with confidence and ease.

Park features still scare the hell out of you.

I mean, if you’re like a lot of snowboarders, even Even tiny flat boxes that are level with the ground incite a full on a panic attack.

Jumps are the same way.

It's really frustrating because you want to be able to shred in the park with your friends. you just can't get past the mental hurtle.

If this is you, we’re going to break down 5 foundational skills for beginner snowboard tricks that's going to have you going from “i need an ice pack,” to “let’s do another run through the park.

If you want to learn ALL the pre-requisites, this week we've got 50% Off Shred School: https://www.edshreds.com/school

Snowboarding Tutorial for Beginners

girl standing

Ok, let’s get you park ready, so the next time you show up to the mountain, your friends ask you “when did you get so good.”

If you’re still skeptical, let me tell you this. ANYONE can learn basic park tricks if they start small and work their way up, even you.

What you have to remember is that ALL snowboard tricks are built on a foundation of fundamentals.

The more you master those fundamentals, the easier the tricks get and the less you fall.

Beginner Snowboarding Skill #1: Carving

Skill #1 is… Carvin. And I don’t mean swiveling around your back goot, or learning how to stop. I mean actually learning how to hold a straight edge in the snow, and perform long drawn carves.

Focusing on your carving technique is going to help you Hold an edge up the halfpipe wall, up a jump or up to a rail.

Focus on keeping your shoulders in line with your snowboard rather than counter rotating. You can even pretend that you are holding a piece of string connected to your nose and tail with each hand to keep your shoulders parallel to your snowboard.

The stronger your carve, the more speed you can hold going into a feature, and the more control you’ll have on the landing.

Beginner Snowboarding Skill #2: Speed Check

Skill #2 is The speed check – unlike a long drawn out carve, the speed check uses counter rotation, meaning your board turns the opposite way of your shoulders, with a quick kick of the back foot to “check your speed,” i.e. cut a little speed on the way up to a feature without dramatically altering your line in.

This is essential because park features usually require getting the speed perfect. You can come in with some extra heat and cut speed at the last minute.

  • Quick sliding turns on the way up to a box, rail or jump to adjust your speed last minute

Beginner Snowboarding Skill #3: Riding Switch

Skill #3 is Riding switch. Getting into the habit of riding switch every time you go to the mountain is going to make every single freestyle trick easier. You’ll be able to do 180s, land backward, hit features switch, butter and on and on.

Without this skill you are severely limited in what tricks you can do.

Beginner Snowboarding Skill #4: Butters

Skill #4 is Butters. Butter involves pressing over your nose or tail, usually with a 180 in and a 180 or 360 out. This trick is perfect practice for spins off jump, advanced edge control in the park and learning to press on boxes and rails.

The key is to shift your hips over the side of the board you want to press, and always keep your downhill edge up to prevent catching an edge.

Beginner Snowboarding Skill #5: Ollies

Skill #5 is The Ollie, the foundational trick for just about every park trick there is. Learning how to properly use the built in pop of your snowboard is key to sending it off kickers, making it up onto rails, and riding the mountain like a skatepark.

Snowboarding for Beginners

Lastly bonus I have a bonus skill for you. It’s the ability to make Incremental progress , what I call progressive trick stacking.

What this means is you learn tricks in proper order, and master the fundamentals before moving on to harder tricks.

It means baby steps, and instead of heading straight to the big jumps, you start small and work your way up.

Instead of trying to send a 540 off your biggest park jump, you take the time to learn proper switch backside 180s.

You learn tricks over and over on the smallest box before stepping up to a rail.

Your willingness to start small, take baby steps and work your way up is key to consistent injury free progress.

So that’s it, 5 crucial skills every snowboarder needs to learn beginner snowboard tricks.

We’ve got carving, speed checks, riding switch, butters, the ollie, and last but not least progressive trick stacking i.e. baby steps.

Go out there, give these 5 skills a shot, and don’t forget to check out Shred School if you want in depth tutorials on everything we talked about today.

That’s all for today, peace out shredder.
